One Piece Card Game Starter Decks: Which One Should You Pick First?

one piece

If you’re new to the One Piece Card Game, a Starter Deck is the smartest first purchase. Each one is a ready-to-play, tournament-legal deck built around a single Leader, so you can learn the rules with a balanced list instead of guessing which cards work together. But with so many Starter Decks available, which one should you start with?

Quick tip: pick the Leader and colour you enjoy most. You’ll play better with a deck you like, and every Starter Deck can be upgraded later with booster packs and single cards.

What comes in a Starter Deck?

  • A Leader card that sets the deck’s colour and special ability
  • A complete 50-card main deck ready to play
  • DON!! cards, the resource you use to play cards and power up attacks
  • A play sheet and rules guide for learning your first games

How the colours play

Every Leader has one or two colours, and each colour has its own style. This is the quickest way to narrow your choice:

ColourPlay styleGood for players who…
RedAggressive attacks and power boostslike to pressure their opponent from turn one
GreenResting and controlling opposing characters, flexible DON!! useenjoy tricky, tactical turns
BlueReturning cards to hand and drawing cardslike control and card advantage
PurpleBig DON!! ramp and powerful late playsenjoy building toward huge turns
BlackRemoving characters and using cost reductionlike to break up the opponent’s board
YellowLife-card tricks and Trigger effectsenjoy comebacks and surprise swings

How to choose your first deck

  1. Start with a character you love. It sounds simple, but enjoying your Leader keeps you playing.
  2. Pick a single-colour deck first. One colour is usually easier to learn than a two-colour Leader.
  3. Ask your local scene. If you’ll play at a game store, find out which decks people play there.
  4. Think about upgrades. Some Starter Decks are well supported by later booster sets, which makes them easier to improve.

Upgrading your Starter Deck

Once you’ve played a few games, you’ll notice cards that feel weak. Upgrading is part of the fun:

  • Swap low-impact cards for stronger ones of the same colour from booster packs
  • Add extra copies (up to 4) of your best cards
  • Balance your cost curve so you have plays every turn
  • Look at what other players do with the same Leader for ideas

Starter Deck or booster packs first?

Start with the Starter Deck. Booster packs are exciting, but random cards don’t make a deck on their own. A Starter Deck teaches you the game; booster packs and sealed boxes help you grow it.
