How to Spot Fake or Resealed Pokémon Booster Packs

As Pokémon TCG prices have climbed, so has the number of counterfeit and resealed products. A resealed pack has been opened, searched for valuable cards and glued shut again. A counterfeit pack was never made by The Pokémon Company at all. Either way, the buyer loses. Here are the signs every collector should know.
Golden rule: if a deal looks too good to be true, it usually is. Sealed products sold far below market price are the number-one red flag.
1. Check the crimps
Genuine booster packs are sealed at the top and bottom with a factory crimp: a neat, evenly ridged seal running straight across the pack.
- Genuine: crisp, uniform ridges and straight edges
- Suspicious: wavy, flattened or uneven crimps, shiny glue marks, or a crimp that looks pressed by hand
- Compare the top and bottom crimp. On a resealed pack they often look different
2. Look closely at the pack wrapper
- Print should be sharp, with clean logos and correct colours
- Blurry artwork, spelling mistakes or a dull, washed-out finish are warning signs
- The pack should feel snug around the cards, not loose or baggy
- Look for small tears, creases or stretched foil near the seams
3. Inspect the box shrink-wrap
Sealed boxes and Elite Trainer Boxes are shrink-wrapped at the factory. Resealers often rewrap boxes with a heat gun.
- Factory wrap is tight and smooth, with neat folded seams
- Rewrapped boxes often have bunched corners, melted spots or thick, messy seams
- Many official Pokémon products use branded wrap. Plain, generic plastic on a box that should be branded is a red flag
4. Know the signs of fake cards
If you’ve already opened a pack and something feels off, check the cards:
- Font and text: wrong fonts, spelling errors or misaligned text
- Colour: the blue on the back looks too light, too dark or purple
- Finish: holo patterns that look flat or printed on, or cards that feel unusually glossy or thin
- Energy symbols and HP: wrong sizes, wrong styles or odd values
- Light test: genuine cards have an inner layer that blocks most light. Many fakes let far more light through
5. Watch for seller red flags
- Prices well below what other trusted sellers charge
- Stock photos only, with no real pictures of the item
- Vague answers about where the product came from
- “Loose” packs sold from a box that was clearly opened
- No returns policy and no way to contact the seller
