One Piece Card Game for Beginners: How to Get Started
The One Piece Card Game from Bandai has become one of the most played trading card games since it launched in 2022. It’s fast, easy to pick up, and every deck is led by a famous character from the series. This guide covers everything you need for your first game: what goes into a deck, how a turn works, how battles are decided and which products to buy first.
What you need to play
- One Leader card sets your deck’s colour, starting Life and special ability.
- A 50-card main deck of Characters, Events and Stages that match your Leader’s colour, with no more than 4 copies of any card number.
- A 10-card DON!! deck, the resource you spend to play cards and power up attacks.
- Sleeves and a playmat are optional but keep your cards in top condition.
The five card types
| Card type | What it does |
|---|---|
| Leader | Starts in play. Has a Life value, power and its own effect, and can attack every turn. |
| Character | Your crew. Played by paying DON!!, they attack and block. |
| Event | One-time effects. Many can be used on your opponent’s turn as Counters. |
| Stage | Locations that stay in play and give ongoing effects. |
| DON!! | Your energy. Spent to pay costs or attached to cards for +1000 power. |
Setting up a game
- Place your Leader face up and shuffle your deck.
- Draw 5 cards. You may return them and draw a fresh 5 once (a mulligan).
- Place cards from the top of your deck face down as Life cards, equal to your Leader’s Life value.
- Decide who goes first. The first player skips their first draw and gets only 1 DON!! that turn.
How a turn works
Every turn follows the same five phases:
- Refresh: stand your rested cards and return any attached DON!! to your cost area.
- Draw: draw 1 card.
- DON!!: add 2 DON!! cards from your DON!! deck to your cost area.
- Main: play Characters, Events and Stages by resting DON!! equal to their cost, attach DON!! to your cards (+1000 power each during your turn), use effects and attack.
- End: end-of-turn effects resolve and play passes to your opponent.
How battles work
To attack, rest your Leader or a Character and choose a target: your opponent’s Leader or one of their rested Characters. A Character can’t attack on the turn it is played unless it has Rush.
The defender can respond in two ways. A Character with Blocker can step in and take the attack instead. Then the defender can play Counter cards from their hand to raise the power of the card being attacked for that battle.
If the attacker’s power is equal to or higher than the defender’s, the attack succeeds. A Character that loses is K.O.’d and goes to the trash. When your Leader is hit, you add your top Life card to your hand, and if it has a Trigger you may activate it for free.
What to buy first
1. A Starter Deck
Starter Decks are ready to play out of the box and are the cheapest way to learn. Pick a Leader from a character you like; you’ll enjoy playing them more.
2. Booster packs from a current set
Once you know the rules, booster packs from a recent main set add stronger cards to your deck. If you plan to build several decks, a full booster box is better value than buying packs one at a time.
3. Singles for the cards you’re missing
For specific cards your deck needs, buying singles is usually cheaper than opening packs and hoping.
Five beginner mistakes to avoid
- Stacking all your DON!! on one attacker. Spread your power so a single Counter can’t stop your whole turn.
- Ignoring Counter values. Cards with +1000 or +2000 Counter are your defence, so don’t play every card just because you can.
- Attacking Characters when the Leader matters more. Pressure on Life usually wins games.
- Running out of Life too early. Taking hits draws you cards, but leaves you open to a finishing attack.
- Playing too many single copies. 4 copies of your key cards makes your deck far more consistent.
